Other Genres of Music
There are many other types of music that are performed here. One is called soca, which is very popular in Guyana. This kind of music was imported from Trinidad and Tobago and it has come to be a grand event, if not the grandest of the festival. There is also a separate competition in Guyana that is devoted to soca. This competition has also taken over as by far the most popular of the three. In 1992, during the general election the soca anthem was "follow da leader."
In Guyana there are many other popular musical genres, because it is such a diverse place with so many different groups of people. While there is no national Guyanese genre that has the popularity as some of the genres seen in other Caribbean countries, the music seen here is very popular. Guyana has taken in basically every genre of music and the people here have added their own elements to it.
Going into every genre that is played in Guyana would be difficult, but the most popular ones are the ones that have been covered.
