While Reggae music is a Jamaican music genre that was created here as well, it spread to Guyana and became very popular here. Reggae first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s, and soon spread and became popular in many different places. This kind of music evolved over time and in the 1970s, it changed from a relatively non confrontational music expression to one that was openly challenging the dominant socio political system in Jamaica. The attributes of Reggae music along with the ethos of Rastafari spilled over and took root in Guyana.
Reggae is a genre that is based on a rhythmic style of music that is characterized by regular beats on the off-beat. Reggae is usually slower than ska music (which is another popular music genre in Jamaica) but the two are somewhat similar. It also usually has accents on the first and third beat in each bar. In Reggae music, the lyrics deal with a wide variety of subjects, including religion, love, sex, peace, relationships, poverty, injustice and other social and political issues.
